The co-founder of the New Testament Assembly of Churches in the UK, Bishop Melvin Powell, died on Wednesday.
One of Britain’s foremost black church leaders, Bishop Powell had a reputation for humility, compassion and vision.
The Jamaican-born leader co-founded the New Testament Assembly in 1961 with his good friend Bishop Donald Bernard and remained in active ministry for more than four decades.
Over and above his role as church leader, Bishop Powell was involved in the Home Care Service at the local Neighbourhood Centre.
He and Bishop Bernard handed over the reins of the denomination last August to Bishop Hugh Thomas, leader of the NTA in Canada.
From its humble beginnings, the NTA has grown to have 16 churches in the UK and more than 200 around the world.
The NTA’s headquarters are at the Tooting, south London branch where prayers and condolences are being directed.
Bishop Powell is survived by his wife Rose.
