Church service for hit-and-run community

A service of prayer and reflection was held on Sunday for the one woman killed and 13 injured in a series of collisions in Cardiff on Friday.

The apparent hit-and-runs have left the community shocked.

Karina Menzies, a 32-year-old mother, was killed in the collision.

A 31-year-old man is being questioned by police on suspicion of murder.

Members of the community gathered at the Church of the Resurrection in Ely, one of the areas affected by events.

They offered prayers and lit candles at the service, which was led by priest-in-charge, the Rev Jan Gould.

She said, “This will be an opportunity for the whole community to come together, share their grief and find support. People here are numb at the moment and in shock – it’s like a state of carnage.

"Fortunately, despite its problems, Ely is a very close knit community and people here are wonderful at pulling together and supporting each other.

"They always turn to the church in times of trouble and we are here to help however we can.”

The Church of the Resurrection stayed open on Saturday for members of the community who needed someone to talk to.

The parish’s bereavement team has made itself available to offer guidance and pastoral care.

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, who is also Bishop of Llandaff, said, “One tragic incident like this shows how fragile life is and how vulnerable we all are. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families of those affected.”
