More than forty people, including representatives from the Christian Ecology Link, gathered in Yorkshire over the weekend to consider what can be done to stem the negative effects of global warming.

|TOP|The gathering was held as part of One World Week, which runs from 23 to 30 October and promotes local level action as a complement to efforts at the national level.

The meeting was chaired by Rector Rev. Thomas, with presentations from Dr. John Smith of the Cumbrian Environment Groups and Jill Perry of the Maryport branch of Friends of the Earth.

Dr. Smith warned against a possible increase in temperature of around 2 to 6 degrees in the coming century at the meeting, which ran under the motto “A challenge: Global Warming – what can we do?”.

Ms. Perry said that the situation was “not hopeless” and urged people to write to their local MPs asking them to sign the Early Day Motion about Climate Change, which calls for the Climate Change Bill to be brought forward that would commit the government to reducing the output of CO2 in the UK by 3 per cent each year.

The Friends of the Earth representative warned that if small cuts are not made now bigger cuts will have to be made later.

Ms. Perry also recommended small changes like buying more local produce, not eating meat more than three times a week and installing solar panels for heating water.
