Christians can now listen to their favourite Christian music for a fraction of the price through a new streaming app.

The new service, called The Overflow, only charges $4.99 per month for unlimited streaming of its catalogue of around 400,000 Christian tracks. Forbes said this monthly fee is only half of what users would pay for the same service with Spotify.

According to the app's website, The Overflow was born out of a lunch discussion between its co-founders Stephen Relph and Chris Shaban. From that discussion, the pair launched a Christian music download centre in 2012, and subsequently worked to develop a similar solution for mobile that eventually became The Overflow.

Co-founder Relph said that the app is their company's solution to an unaddressed opportunity in the music industry that caters to Christian music fans.

"I believe Christian music fans have unmet needs and I see a gap in the marketplace," Relph told Forbes.

Relph also expressed his belief that the Christian music industry is more than just a genre. Instead, there are many different types of Christian music.

"Treating Christian as a genre is also a bit of a misstep —Christian is really more of a lifestyle composed of numerous sub genres", the businessman opined.

According to Forbes, the team behind The Overflow are carefully curating the content that is made available for streaming by their users.

They have come up with pre-set playlists and will provide users with advice or suggestions on Christian music that they might like based on their previous choices. The Overflow's website also allows artists to add their own works to the library in an effort to make the app's libraries as comprehensive as possible.

Forbes revealed that the team is also working to make a PC-based version available by spring this year.
