'Chicago P.D.' season 3 spoilers: Will Erin Lindsey's decision stand?

Is it really goodbye for Erin Lindsey's detective career in the next season of Chicago P.D.?NBC

Something unexpected happened in the season 2 finale of "Chicago P.D." which even cast member Sophia Bush never thought possible.

In the episode titled "Born Into Bad News" aired Wednesday, Bush's character Erin Lindsey did the unthinkable and quit her job as a detective in Chicago's Intelligence Unit after suffering from grief due to Nadia DeCotis' (Stella Maeve) death. Bush told The Hollywood Reporter that she was also shocked with that development in Lindsey's life.

"The notion that she would even hand her badge over is something that I had to talk to the writers about a lot as we were developing what would happen to her and what this struggle would look like," the actress shared.

Bush believed that Erin was shaken hard when Nadia died because she failed to save someone's life just like what her mentor Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) did when she was a troubled teenager. If Erin did not work hard to make Nadia just like her, she believed that her friend and roommate would still be alive.

But will Erin's decision to leave Chicago P.D. remain firm until the third season of the show?

The actress told THR that she is looking forward to seeing where the season will take Erin when it returns to its Wednesday night timeslot next fall. She said that the writers are currently deliberating how long the time jump in the next season should be.

"If it is more than a month, how far has Lindsay gone? Where will we find her? If it's six days, is she just going to be on a little bit of a bender? At this point, nothing is set in stone. It's really a conversation but we're certainly picking apart all of the options and trying to figure out what will be best," the "One Tree Hill" alum stated.

But if she will get her way, she wants to see what happens to Erin the day after she turned over her badge, and let her find her way for a couple more episodes before she contemplates returning to the police department again.
