God is good, loving, and kind. Yet, many make the wrong assumption that anybody can have a father-child relationship with Him. No, that's not true.

A Shocking Surprise

I recently watched a TV talk show where the host asked the show's guest if anybody can have a relationship with God. Of course, the Scripture says that those who want a father-son relationship with God can only do so through the Lord Jesus Christ. That's why I was surprised when the guest replied "yes" to the question.

Legal Children

One definition of the term "relationship" is "the way in which two or more people ... regard and behave toward each other." Based on this, anybody can have a relationship with God, albeit not the Father-child relationship Christians know of and enjoy.

Many have this wrong assumption that because God is good, He will be Father to all. The Bible clearly says "NO" to that. While He desires all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth that Christ is the only way to Him, His Word simply states that those who don't come to Him through faith in Christ aren't His children.

In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me."

If we want God to be our Father, there's no other way to go but through Christ. If we don't come to God through Christ, we're illegitimate sons and daughters. We don't have a right to call Him "Dad."

Unless we come to God through Christ, we're simply outsiders. If we don't believe Christ and make Him both Saviour and Lord of our lives, we're but unsaved, condemned men who will never be allowed entry into the Kingdom, and a loving relationship with God.

State of Disconnection

Relationship is also defined as "the state of being connected." Without coming through Christ, we'll never be connected to God, ever.

Some make this journey to find God and get connected to Him through various means, such as "looking into one's self," meditation, and going through retreats in the mountains. No, we won't find God inside us, we won't succeed connecting with Him by meditating, and we don't need to go to the mountains to find Him.

The answer is simply connecting to Him through Christ, without whom we'll always be in a state of disconnection with God because of our sin.

Not About Religion

Friend, if ever you haven't put your faith in Christ's atoning work of salvation, I'd like to invite you. God is a loving God who has provided the only way for us to connect to Him as an adopted child, and that way is through Christ alone.

Ephesians 1:5 tells us, "God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure."

He longs to have you, and all you need to do is come to Him through Christ.
