A British soldier was killed by a mine while on patrol in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the Ministry of Defence said on Sunday.

The ministry said the soldier was part of a patrol responding to reports of a grenade attack at an airfield.

The death brings to 110 the number of British troops killed since U.S.-led forces invaded Afghanistan to drive out the Taliban government and al Qaeda militants after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
