While promoting his new film "Sicario" at the Toronto International Film Festival, director Denis Villenueve revealed in an interview with Crave Online that "Blade Runner 2" will address the biggest unsolved mystery from the 1982 Ridley Scott original: Is Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard a real human or is he a unique type of replicant?

At first, the director stated that he wasn't in the position to give a proper answer. He did confirm, however, that any answer given in the new film will have a big impact on the first. 

"Totally," he stated, "the thing I must say is that I love mystery. I love shadows. I love doubts. I would just want to say to the fans that we will take care of that mystery. I will take care of it." 

He did not directly state whether or not Deckard's humanity will be confirmed in the film, as his comments may also mean that he is simply going to honor that ambiguity in the upcoming sequel. 

The Internet is filled with forums and posts of people debating whether or not Deckard is truly human, or if he is similar to the character Rachel (Sean Young), a replicant who thinks she is human. In the director's cut and final cut of the first film, there are also scenes inserted where it is implied that Deckard is actually a replicant. 

Early on in the movie, Deckard dreams of a unicorn. At the end, Officer Gaff (Edward James Olmos) leaves an origami unicorn on the desk for Deckard to see, suggesting that his dreams are implanted memories. 

In a New York Times interview back in 2007, Ridley Scott stated firmly that he believed Deckard is a replicant. However, as pointed out by Cinema Blend, actor Harrison Ford believes Deckard is a human being. 

"Blade Runner 2" will star Ryan Gosling in a currently undisclosed role, with Ford appearing in the third act of the film. No confirmed release date has been announced yet.
