Leading representatives of the Baptist World Alliance and the German Federation of Evangelical Free Churches in Germany have unanimously agreed that Baptists need to do more for social justice.

General secretary of the BWA, Dr Denton Lotz, urged Baptists at the recent German Federation’s annual conference in Walsrode-Krelingen that more had to be done to take a stand against particular social issues contrary to the Christian faith.

“We must do more than simply be against abortion. We must also resist structures which force young men into war,” he said at the conference attended by around 1,100 delegates and visitors.

He added that it was strange “that those who are against abortion, often sanction war, while those who sanction abortion, are against war.”

He warned that Christians should be against both and that it was not enough to simply condemn homosexuality but that Christians “must develop a Christian understanding of human sexuality”.

Dr Lotz also warned against the damage done by internet pornography “which spoils many men and keeps them from finding God”.

General secretary of the German Federation Regina Claas urged delegates that the call to mission is “more pressing than ever” and called on fellow Baptists to “practise a modest style of living” together with prayer.

He also warned it was not enough for worship services to only stir warm feelings, but that they had to prepare members for service to others by following the example of Christ.

“He is the one who feeds the hungry, gives water to the thirsty and preaches the Good News to the poor.”

The conference was held under the motto “Living Evangelistically – Looking Into and Doing”.
