African Union leaders began debating a resolution on Tuesday that would call for a government of national unity in Zimbabwe following an election crisis, sources at a summit in Egypt said.
The sources told Reuters the resolution would also call for talks between President Robert Mugabe's government and the opposition, and would pledge African Union (AU) support for the political process.
They said the resolution was submitted to the meeting by Tanzania, the current AU chairman, Swaziland and Angola.
One source said Mugabe had started to address a closed session of the summit in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. It was not immediately clear what he said.
