Egypt's Premier League matches have been suspended after a riot broke out on Sunday. 

The Interior Ministry said that fans without tickets to the Zamalek and ENPPI game attempted to force their way into a stadium in Cairo. At least 19 people were killed when the civilians clashed with police. 

"They climbed the fence," Ministry officials said in a statement. "Ten were injured in a stampede. The security forces tried to disperse them, the fans fled to the main road and blocked traffic and stopped the bus carrying the Zamalek soccer team. 

"They set fire to a police vehicle. We got reports of fatalities because of a stampede."

According to the Ultras White Knights - a group of fanatical Zamalek supporters - the crowd was trying to enter through a single, small-gated entrance and was sprayed with tear gas.

The government-controlled Al-Ahram news site reported that at least 30 were killed. 

An investigative team was dispatched by the country's general prosecutor to research the facts of the case. 

The deceased were taken to a morgue in central Cairo, where relatives waited for the bodies. CNN reported that fans of a rival club also gathered in a display of solidarity. 

The tragedy is the deadliest soccer-related clash in Egypt since 2012, when over 70 people died and 1,000 were injured at a soccer match in Port Said.
