When Angelina Jolie was given the favourite villain award for her role in Maleficent during the Nickelodeon's 28th Annual Kids' Choice Awards, she inspired the audience to embrace their differences and be proud of who they are.

The awards ceremony was Jolie's first public appearance since revealing that she underwent a second preventive surgery, and she attended the show with her children Shiloh and Zahara, CNN reports.

During her speech, Jolie said: "When I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different. And I felt out of place - too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in."

But everything changed when she realised that being different is actually a good thing, and she hopes everybody else would realise the same thing. "Don't fit in, don't sit still, don't ever try to be less than what you are, and when someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up high and be proud," she said.

The actress even added: "As your villain, I would also say cause a little trouble - it's good for you."

Jolie is definitely the poster child for being different. Throughout her career, the actress has chosen diverse roles before settling into the role of mother, wife, and humanitarian.

She played the mentally unstable Lisa in Girl, Interrupted; mysterious Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life; and even lent her voice as Tigress in the animated film Kung-Fu Panda.

Now, she is the special envoy of the United Nation's High Commissioner for Refugees. Jolie has gained the respect of more people for her work outside of Hollywood. She has six children with husband Brad Pitt, three of whom are adopted.
