Android One in India gets Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop update

Android One devices in India are slowly throwing on a fresher Lollipop look. Vice President of Product Management for Google Caesar Sengupta acknowledged the eventual fulfillment of the long-promised Android Lollipop rollout to the handsets in a recent Google+ post

"We've already started rolling out Lollipop to a small number of [Android One] phones in India," Sengupta wrote. "This is a gradual process and so each week we'll push the OTA update to more phones selected at random (pro-tip: connecting over WiFi will increase your odds)."

Android One phones ship with Android Lollipop 5.0. The said phones in the Philippines received the Android Lollipop 5.1 build just recently and the India Android One phones are sure to get the same.

However, a detail that was not touched on in the post is the specific Android One handset that will actually get to install the software. There are three Android One phones in India — the Spice Android One Dream UNO Mi-498 phone, the Karbonn Sparkle V and the Micromax Canvas A1, all of which are believed to be eligible to get Android Lollipop 5.1.

Google's Android One initiative aims to introduce high-quality products around the Android system that are easy on the pocket. According to Times of India, companies such as Acer, Alcatel, Asus, HTC, Intex, Lava, Panasonic, Lenovo, Xolo and Qualcomm might be joining the program soon.

Along with the promise of cost-effective handsets to countries like India, Google itself gave its word about on-the-dot software updates to the handsets within the initiative. This makes Android One owners the first on the list to get the latest operating system. However, the priority rollout was not carried out on time. Nevertheless, the Android Lollipop rollout is on the move so users who rock Android One phones better get ready for a makeover.
