AMD has officially unveiled the new AMD Zen CPU, which is currently going under the codename Summit Ridge. According to a report from Engadget, the new processor is expected to launch by late this year, which indicates it will release prior to the holidays. 

The report continues to point out that if the processor launches by the holidays then there may be a few products such as laptops or package desktops already set to be offered by this December or early 2017. However, the report points out that the main focus is a Zen CPU for desktops followed by one variant for servers and then one for laptops.

According to the report, the new chip promises an increase of processing power up to 40 percent as it utlizes 8 cores and 16 threads. The basic design of the processor is aimed toward mid-range and high-range computers and may be a more suitable choice for gamers and video editors. 

In a report from Trusted Reviews, the new AMD Zen is also aimed to bridge the gap between the processing capabilities of AMD processors and Intel processors such as the recently launched Skylake processors and their upcoming Kaby Lake processors. 

AMD reportedly could be able to catch up with their competitor, thanks to the new 14nm structure used for newer processors. The design process allows for more transistors to fit into a smaller piece of silicon which guarantees much faster processing capabilities. 

It is further stated that the new chip will come with a new "Simultaneous Multi-Threading" capability which is being compared to Intel's Hyper-Threading technique. This will allow the processor to easily deal with multi-tasking and better distribution of processing duties. 

One more confirmed tidbit is that the Zen architecture will later include AMD's APU (accelerated processing unit) which combines a regular CPU with a graphical processing unit into one board.
